Hello Fresh is a new meal subscription service to Canada. I have been very happy with the meal subscription boxes I have ordered from Chef’s Plate so I figured I would try another service. Hello Fresh currently delivers to Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Newfoundland, and the Maritimes.
With Hello Fresh you can choose from three menu plans. The Pronto Plan has meals that can be prepared in 20-30 minutes and costs $11.67 per plate. The Family Plan is family friendly and also are ready in 30 minutes. It costs $10.83 per plate. The last plan is Veggie Plan which features all vegetarian meals that can be made in under 30 minutes and costs $12.33 per plate. Shipping is included in the cost.
I chose the Pronto Plan and chose three dishes from four options. The dishes I chose were; BBQ Sausage Skewers, Dukkah Steak and Pea and Asparagus Gnocchi. The fourth meal option that I didn’t choose was a Honey-Sesame Chicken.
Shipping is free and is delivered by purolator. It was packaged in an insulated box with ice packs and arrived cold. I appreciate how the ingredients are separated into little cardboard boxes that stack nicely in the fridge. The meat is found in the bottom under ice packs.
This was the first meal I made. The instructions were easy to follow and I completed it in about 20 minutes. I was impressed by the finished product – it was a great steak and it paired nicely with the seared zucchini, green beans and feta cheese. You could pair anything with feta cheese and I would like it.
BBQ Sausage Skewers
I miss cooking with a barbecue so knowing that this recipe used the oven but is BBQ inspired is the reason I chose this recipe. I was a bit disappointed as I felt like it didn’t bring that barbecue taste I was looking for. They did think of everything for this dish by including skewers which I appreciated! All in all it was a good meal it just didn’t wow me!
Pea and Asparagus Gnocchi
I really enjoyed making this quick dish – it was my favourite of the three. Gnocchi isn’t an ingredient I usually cook with and I wouldn’t have thought to pair it with asparagus which is one of my favourite vegetables. I shared this dish with friends and they all had good things to say about it! This recipe is going into my recipe folder and I will definitely make it again!
I would definitely order from Hello Fresh again. I appreciated the clean boxes the meals came in. These dishes were from the pronto plan and they were easy and quick to prepare which was a bonus! One downside compared to other meal subscription boxes I’ve tried is that you have to order three meals yet you only have four options to choose from. In the future I would love to see them add in five options to choose from to add a bit more variety.
