Traveling with allergies and food restrictions is never easy, and when you add a language barrier it can be quite overwhelming. After travelling Europe for 5 weeks with my best friend who has celiac disease, and must therefore avoid gluten, I was able witness some of the challenges she faced. She found very few updated resources for travelling Europe as a celiac which inspired me to write about our experiences . This post will be focusing on travelling Spain gluten free; watch for future posts that include France and Germany.

Language cards were very useful in Spain. In addition to having language cards saved on your phone, I suggest printing some out so the waiter can take it back to the kitchen. In our experience we found this very helpful as there were several occasions where the menu indicated something was gluten-free but when the dish came out it was not. Continue reading
